DianneMillen? first introduced me to the idea of a difference between gender and sex.
- Sex. The sex of someone is the biological and anatomical kind of person someone is, and the necessary physical consequences of that.
- Gender. can be seen as the social constructs built around sex not, by any means, just applying to people.
I think this is a good starting point for a more complex less easy to state separation.
(Counterexample: the gender of a plug on a cable is anatomical, not social.)
- A more complex version is to split gender identity into: genetic, reproductive, functional, presented, parental, legal, daily, sexual, conventional and personal. --Pallando
